Ali's belief in himself was something I picked up on, and it's become my own philosophy.

You get these moments in the ring that live forever. That's what Muhammad Ali accomplished, and I hope that I have, too.

Boxing is the ultimate challenge. There's nothing that can compare to testing yourself the way you do every time you step in the ring. On the downside, you meet a lot of really bad people in boxing, at all stages of your career.

Boxing was the only career where I wouldn't have to start out at the bottom. I had a good resume.

Work ethic has always been stressed in my family. My dad is going to be 80 years old and he still works part time. My mom just retired a couple years ago and she's in her mid- to late 70s.

I was just 18 years old, excited about being drafted to the N.B.A. I felt like all of Houston was watching me. My high school was watching me. I think they had a draft party at my coach's house. I'll never forget that day, being in the green room with my family and my agent.

My understanding of racial discrimination as a child was highly distorted because the most prominent man in Archery was an African-American bishop. When he came home from up north, where he was in charge of A.M.E. churches in five states, it was front-page news. He was the most successful man in my life.

My family never took vacations; we never traveled together. We never did anything. My spring breaks were going home to help my dad at the restaurant.
