I never pursued a career relentlessly.

It's a blessing and a curse. But it's not always the best situation to be in. As a profession, I don't recommend acting at all.

I've got the best deal on Earth. Where else can I sin and know that I'm forgiven for it?

My dream as a youngster was to be like Olivier. To be a great stage actor. To be a great Shakespearean actor. To me that is the Olympics of acting.

Since we launched the original 'Pop Idol' in England, I've remained close with Simon Fuller. Working as executive producer on 'American idol' for its first seven years not only was an inspirational journey into the heart of American pop culture, it opened my eyes to the untapped potential of the incredibly dynamic young people in this world.

I always try, if I can, to travel before I start a writing project. For me, travelling is my education. It inspires me, and it clears my mind and allows me to come back with a cleansed palate.

So it's been kind of a long road, but it was a good journey altogether.
