Cities around the United States do not have land use planning like we have in Oregon, and they are all struggling with issues like affordable housing.

Tackling affordable housing via land use planning won't necessarily solve the problem.

It's absolutely critical that we not only provide support from cradle to career in the education system but also the wraparound services.

I have spent my career fighting to make Oregon a place where everyone can thrive.

I'm living to the edges of my fingernails, using everything I have. It's impossible for me to look at things politically or in any way as a project, to further my career. You're injected directly into the blood of the places in which you're living and what's going on there.

People don't realize that we cannot forecast the future. What we can do is have probabilities of what causes what, but that's as far as we go. And I've had a very successful career as a forecaster, starting in 1948 forward. The number of mistakes I have made are just awesome. There is no number large enough to account for that.

Someone actually asked me once if I used coming out as a publicity stunt. It's cool that we live in a time when being gay could be seen as helping your career.

I think, in anyone's career, you have to map out some sort of strategy of steps that take you closer to the career you want.
