The people who have been helping me in the past continue to support me. Many of them supported my father, and the support isn't just financial.

As a public figure, you have to maintain a certain demeanor. We also have responsibility to the public, but of course, I'm not perfect. I have a lot of flaws; my husband can tell you that, my friends, even. They know who I am.

So when these people sell out, even though they get fabulously rich, they're gypping themselves out of one of the potentially most rewarding experiences of their unfolding lives. Without it, they may never know their values or how to keep their newfound wealth in perspective.

Playwriting is the last great bastion of the individual writer. It's exciting precisely because it's where the money isn't. Money goes to safety, to consensus. It's not individualism.
